We've Been Planning...

So we're learning all about sound this term and need to make some instruments in preparation for the concert we're part of in Week 10. In order to make an instrument we need to make a plan first. We haven't really made plans before, but we worked out that we follow them quite often. Like when we bake a cake ... that's following a plan.

A good plan will have a list of all the things we need to make whatever it is we're planning to make. It will also have the directions, or steps required to make it. Usually a plan has a picture too. We decided we needed practice constructing a technology plan before we make some for our musical instruments.

We watched some cool clips of Linsey Pollak. Linsey is a talented musician and expert recycler. He uses everyday items and makes amazing instruments from them. Check this video out of him playing a Rubber Glove Bagpipe...

Have you heard the bagpipes before? This is what bagpipes look and sound like ...

We decided we would make our own Rubber Glove Bagpipes. We looked online to see if we could find a tutorial. We found this one, made by some really clever children.

We co-constructed our own technology plan, 'How to Make Rubber Glove Bagpipes'...

Then we tried out the plan to see if it would work...

Step 1: Decorate your cardboard tube with coloured paper and stickers.
Step 2: Place the rubber glove part way over the cardboard tube.
Step 3: Tape the glove tightly around the tube so no air escapes.
Step 4: Cut a very small hole in the middle finger ...
and insert the straw.
Step 5: Tape the rubber glove tightly around the straw so no air can escape.

Step 6: Hold the tube in one hand and blow really hard into the straw while you move the tube up and down.  The glove needs to be really tight against the tube when you blow to make a sound.

The plan worked.  We found out that to create a musical instrument you must follow a process that follows a sequence.  Next week we are going to make some plans for the instruments we are going to make for the concert - a tin drum, a pan flute and a shaker. Watch this space...

  1. E7 I never knew you were so super talented! I wonder if I can get invited to your show? I'm getting excited to see what instruments you will make :)
